Computer scientist arguing that reading and writing code remain cognitive labor for developing deep engineering understanding even when AI automates code generation.

PersonUpdated July 12, 20261 source

Daniel Lemire is a computer scientist and writer who argues that AI code generation does not eliminate the cognitive value of reading and writing code. In “Chatting with an AI Won’t Make You a Top Programmer,” he distinguishes code as an output from programming as a way of developing deep technical understanding.1

Lemire predicts a tooling bifurcation: many people may build software without code literacy, while top engineers use tools designed to maximize their understanding and may read more code than engineers could in the past. This places his argument alongside Cognitive Surrender and AI-Assisted Software Development: automation can remove mechanical production, but expertise still depends on active mental labor.1
