Felix Rieseberg
Anthropic engineering manager (Claude.ai, Cowork, Claude Code Desktop) who dropped coding interviews and argues that AI-cheap execution lets hungry newcomers out-impact tenure.
Felix Rieseberg is an engineering manager at Anthropic, where he has led engineering for Claude.ai, Cowork and Claude Code Desktop. He co-maintains Electron and previously worked at Notion, Stripe, Slack and Microsoft.1
In "Hunger beats tenure: Advice for junior engineers" (October 2026) he says he has stopped giving traditional coding interviews, because Claude now does small coding challenges better than candidates and test performance no longer predicts impact. His wider claim is that cheap AI execution lets engineers without status or seniority compete through working prototypes. See Newcomer Advantage.1
Key points:
- Newcomers notice friction that long-time employees no longer see. He cites Patrick Collison telling new Stripe hires to pay attention to anything that seems odd.
- What newcomers usually lack is a voice, not ideas. Execution used to be expensive enough that organisations only backed ideas from people with status; that cost is now low.
- His hiring signal is moving toward small prototypes in résumés and portfolios that show taste, empathy and principled thinking. He says he has not yet worked out how to interview for building well with AI.
