Paul Dix
InfluxData founder and InfluxDB creator arguing that executable verification and agentic software factories will displace manual coding and line-by-line review.
Paul Dix is the founder and CTO of InfluxData and creator of InfluxDB. In “The End of Programming,” he argues that frontier coding agents, large inference budgets, parallel-agent harnesses, and executable verification are shifting software creation away from manually writing and reviewing every line of code.1
His argument is based on two kinds of evidence: his account of the agent-driven Bun rewrite from Zig to Rust, and his own experiments supervising agents that built an Iceberg integration and an edge-replication system for InfluxDB. The latter were working prototypes rather than shipped, supported production features, a distinction he explicitly preserves.1
Dix's forecast is stronger than the evidence directly establishes: he expects the most productive creators to supervise Agentic Software Factories and review behavior rather than source code, while organizational inertia keeps traditional programming alive for years. This places him on the optimistic side of the debate around Loop-Dependent Software and Cognitive Surrender.1
